Contrite Mathis celebrates smoking ban
Former State Rep. Bob Mathis of Hot Springs says he made a mistake three years ago when he opposed the Arkansas Clean Indoor Air Act, later signed into law by then-Gov. Mike Huckabee as Act 8 of 2006.
Mathis, an ex-smoker who during his time in the Legislature often ridiculed state tobacco prevention and cessation programs, now says smoking caused him severe health problems and that he has had surgeries to install two stints.
“I’m alive today because I quit smoking,” he told a small crowd that gathered today at Juanita’s Bar and Grill in Little Rock to celebrate the third anniversary of the law that banned smoking in most public places, including restaurants.
“I have two grandchildren now and I want to make sure I can see them … watch them grow,” he added.
During the 2006 special session, Mathis sponsored Act 13, which prohibits smoking in passenger vehicles where a child under 6 years old is riding in a child safety seat. The third anniversary of that law also is today.

Banning smoking in restaurants is fine with most people. It’t when they want to control small neighborhood bars that have adult songs on the jukebox and vending machines in the men room, and private clubs that it becomes a major issue.
