‘Legislator of the Year’
Rep. Darrin Williams, D-Little Rock, has been named “Legislator of the Year” by the Little Rock Landlords Association.
A freshman legislator, Williams was honored for passage of House Bill 1479, now Act 390 of 2009, which strengthened the law regarding theft of copper and other metals that are sold to scrap dealers.
Jason Bolden, president of the Landlords Association, said a number of the group’s members have been victims of copper and metal thefts and Williams’ bill will help address the problem.
Under the new law, which expands and enhances Act 749 of 2007, scrap metal dealers are required to keep detailed records of their scrap metal dealing. That information, such as fingerprints, photo identification, and license plate numbers, to be placed in a database to help police track down metal thieves.
The database will be created with $150,000 from the state’s surplus funds.
