Taxing golden parachutes
Arkansas Congressman Mike Ross presided over a session today in which the U.S. House passed legislation to tax 90 percent of bonuses doled out by companies propped up with taxpayer funds.
With a 328-93 vote, the House passed the Bonus Recoupment Tax Bill that would place the special tax on corporate bonuses given since the first of the year. The bill now goes to the Senate.
Ross says companies like AIG, which gave $165 million in bonuses to top executives, and Fannie Mae “that are practically underwritten by the federal government cannot be allowed to get away with this flagrant behavior.”
Ross favors an even stiffer tax. This week he co-sponsored the Bailout Bonus Tax Bracket Act, which would apply a 100 percent tax to bonuses over $100,000 disbursed to employees of companies receiving financial rescue dollars.
